I have known and worked with Sylvie for over thirty years, and I can honestly say that her drive and ambition to improve the care of patients suffering from wounds have been an inspiration to everyone throughout this time. From my experience, clinicians can show great skill in the clinic, through research or in the lecture rooms, Sylvie is a rare clinician who has proven to be an exceptional leader in all these areas of wound care, not only within the UK but also internationally.

Sylvie has consistently led the way, inspiring other clinicians to try new treatment modalities, systems and processes in her desire to find the ultimate care pathways that might work to improve the lives of patients suffering from wounds. Sylvie has never shied away from the continuous battles with Stagnating NHS leaders, Political apathy and Clinical ignorance to achieve her goals of improving patient care in the UK.

Yet, throughout these years, Sylvie has never lost the simple empathy needed to be a hands-on clinician, often giving up her weekends and holidays to treat patients in need. Within her is a basic humanity that shines in everything that she does and makes her the model nurse who will inspire a new generation to strive and improve patient care.

Tribute:
The client had terrible and excruciating pain from Pyoderma Gangrenosum and WCC was asked to assess. This is the letter to us after he passed.
“You absolutely succeeded in your task. He was not bothered by his leg at all at the end. He only actually needed some morphine in the last couple of days as his arms swelled a bit and he had some neuropathic pain.
When we first approached WCC you saw he was in excruciating pain. The xxxxx clinic wanted to debride the wound, dress with silver and bandage both legs, and just increase his morphine. They would not believe us that we didn’t think that was the best course of action for dad and they threatened that they would stop us from having any dressings if we did not comply. Thank you so much for listening to us.”

To whom it may concern,
I have known Sylvie Hampton for almost 20 years. I first came across Sylvie’s work when she was helping my Practice Nurses with some difficult wounds. Sylvie had set up a private wound healing centre but had a reputation for being a miracle worker with wounds. The nurses knew of her from her days working in the hospital and Sylvie was always willing to help and assist them.
Over the next seven years we started working together on various projects eventually managing to integrate high-quality, patient centered approach to wound healing in our local practices then area. This service was then developed further and not only became part of local NHS services, but also attracted recognition from the Department of Health and Government ministers. During this time I worked closely with Sylvie and her team but what struck me about her as a person was her energy, passion and dedication to the healing of wounds. Setting up any service is a labour of love but this was literally a 24/7 job which Sylvie did whilst still treating patients.
The service that we set up was innovative, creative and had fantastic wound healing results. As I am sure youare aware none of this happens without incredible dedication, not only hours of hard work but also a true belief and passion in wanting to heal people’s wounds. What we saw was remarkable, wounds that had been dressed four times a week for over 19 years that were healed within six weeks transforming people’s lives.
Sylvie’s dedication to her profession has continued over many years. The service that was set up is just one of her legacies. Others include her work as an author, expert witness, consultant, educator and trainer but most importantly, her one-to-one contact with patients. In so many cases I see people, develop in their roles and as a result, they become very hands off and more engrossed in the management side of businesses but not Sylvie. She has always kept hands on approach to her work, treating patients, innovating and training in wound care.
Sylvie has never been afraid to push the boundaries and to fight for patients to have the best possible care. She has inspired many students to become wound care professionals and has often given this training free of charge in order to up skill and empower health professionals to care for patients.
Nothing has ever been too much trouble for Sylvie and, whilst you will see her name and many articles written about wound care, you will also hear her name mentioned by many health professionals, not only as a healer of wounds but also as a passionate, kind, caring and empathetic person. Patients also adore her but more importantly, they trust and believe in her.

I have been in healthcare 20 years myself and in other professions previously, but I have never met anybody quite so dedicated, passionate and caring.
Many people of Sylvie’s age would have retired by now and would be taking it easy but not Sylvie. She is still helping people and always ready and willing to give her time and expertise to those who need it. Whether, it’s the mum of a disabled child those feet just keep getting covered in sores, the elderly gentleman who can’t shift his leg ulcers or the lady whose breast cancer surgery left a gaping wound that just won’t heal, when asked if she can help you never get, sorry, I am too busy, or perhaps next week, or I know someone who can. What you get is, “What’s their number, I’ll call today”. I think that really says it all.
I will end by saying that I truly believe Sylvie deserves recognition for her creative and innovative work and for her dedication to educating health professionals but most of all for healing and transforming the lives of thousands of patients.
Yours sincerely

I have known Sylvie Hampton for nearly 17 years now, and it gives me an enormous privilege, to give my testimonials to support her

Sylvie Hampton had an immense and positive impact on my professional and personal development as a Specialist Tissue Viability Nurse.
From the very early stage, Sylvie was acting as my Mentor, always leading by example, focusing on my best practices, the highest standards and the patient’s best interest.

She inspired me, to develop my publishing, public speaking and teaching skills, which also impacted numerous other clinicians, to achieve better outcomes for their patients.
Sylvie also helped me to focus on research more, and appreciate the importance of publications, as through the dissemination of knowledge we can help a greater number of clinicians and patients at the same time.

For me, Sylvie Hampton is therefore a personification of professionalism, compassion, patient advocacy, mentoring and leading change through world-class research and education. She tirelessly and selflessly acts on behalf of especially those patients, who often lost hope for being helped. Countless times I have witnessed Sylvie being able to restore the confidence and hope in patients – which then allowed them to achieve better outcomes and better overall quality of life.

I cannot recommend her high enough.

It is impossible to compress the work that Sylvie Hampton does in one short email and so I will highlight the major aspects that Sylvie has achieved in the time that I have known her. She is currently opening Wound Centres across the UK in conjunction with a Medical Organisation who recognise her as the leading authority on wound care. Opening centres has long been a dream for Sylvie and will benefit thousands around the UK. She has set up a support group who have experienced problems with the NHS She has spent endless, unpaid hours dealing with patients who the NHS has either failed or could not treat. She has involved lawyers and other medical practitioners to help with this cause. In some cases, this has been the only outlet that some of these patients have had access too. I know how Sylvie has dedicated her time and own money to this cause driving endless miles to visit some of these patients. Sylvie also helped an elderly lady in Seaford, East Sussex to regain her independence and to save her property. The lady had a serious wound on her leg that Sylvie managed to treat where others had failed. Due to the serious nature of the wound the Lady was required to spend several months in a local nursing home. As her property was under Equity Release terms, she would lose the property if she was unable to move back in within a certain time frame. Through sheer had work and determination, Sylvie managed this with days to spare. However, this set up another set of problems as the Lady was still unable to care for herself. Again, Sylvie at her own time set up an agency to deliver homecare for the patient who now, is safely back in her own property. There are many other instances where Sylvie has treated and helped people. She is an inspiration to us all with her dedication and hard work. She deserves every accolade and praise that is awarded to her. She is always available to help yet remains a very humble and caring person. It is a privilege to know her.
